Old World
This term refers to the Eastern Hemisphere – specifically Europe. People had been living here long before the Americas were discovered.
Jamestown
Established in 1607 by the Virginia Company of London as a business venture, this was the first permanent English settlement in North America.
Virginia Company of London
This joint-stock company was created to settle in Virginia and make the King of England some money.
Joint-stock company
A business venture in which investors pool their wealth for a common goal.
Colony
A country or area under the political control of another country, usually one far away, and occupied by settlers from the home country.
Virginia House of Burgesses
This was the representative assembly of colonial Virginia formed in 1619. It was the first elected assembly in the world.
Cavaliers
This term refers to English nobility who received large land grants in eastern Virginia from the King of England.
indentured servant
These were often poor persons (lower class) from Europe who agreed to work on plantations for a period of time in return for their passage to the New World.
New World
This term refers to the land settled in North America by Europeans.
Plantation
This is an extremely large farm or estate where cotton, tobacco, coffee, sugar cane, etc. is cultivated, usually by resident laborers.
Free enterprise
This is the belief in the ownership of private property and in the right to try and make money.
Cash crops
These items were grown on large plantations in the Virginia and Southern colonies for export to Europe. They include tobacco, rice, and indigo.
Subsistence farming
This means a person grows crops in order to provide for himself, but doesn’t grow extra to sell.
Church of England
The national church of England, founded by King Henry VIII. It influenced the social life of the Southern colonies.
Diverse
This means there are a variety of different people, things, or ideas in a location.
Seaport
A town or city with a harbor for ships.
Commercial center
A place where buying and selling occurs frequently.
Religious tolerance
This is the acceptance that many religious exist, and the allowance of these many religions to practice freely.
Democracy
This refers to a form of government in which the supreme power is given to the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected officials.
Puritans
This group settled in New England and formed a "covenant community" based on the principles of the Mayflower Compact. They were intolerant of other religious beliefs.
Covenant community
This is a religious group whose members bind themselves to one another and to the group by a solemn agreement.
Mayflower Compact
This served as the framework for self-government of the Plymouth Colony signed on the ship the "Mayflower" in 1620.
Persecution
Hostility based on political or religious beliefs.
Rhode Island
This colony was founded by dissenters fleeing persecution by Puritans in Massachusetts.
Dissenter
A person whose beliefs differ from the established church’s beliefs.
Direct Democracy
In this form of government, people vote on laws and policies directly.
Town meetings
This was a form of local government in New England where members of the community would get together to discuss laws.
Columbian Exchange
This was the global exchange of goods and ideas between Europe, Africa, and the Americas after Columbus made his first transatlantic voyage in 1492.
Middle Passage
This term refers to the forced transport of enslaved Africans from West Africa to the Americas.
Enslave
This means to force a person into bondage.
