The Great Compromise retained the bicameral legislature as proposed by James Madison, along with proportional representation in the lower house, but required the upper house to be weighted equally between the states. The separation of powers was the 3 branches of government to make sure that no branch got too much power. Montesquieu influenced this because he separated the French government into 3 divisions.
