Why countries colonize

-Natural recourses


-Natural market for mother country's products


(Colony sends recourses to mother country, mother country will take that recourse and make it into a product, then sell it back to the colonies

-Beginning of the end for the Native population. Their land was taken and Europeans brought diseases. They were beaten, raped and enslaved.


-New natural recourses introduced & traded.


Columbian exchange was the trade of living things between the old and new worlds. (People, Animals, Plants, Diseases)

Middle Colonies - Economic/Social/Climate/Geography

Economy - Small businesses, some industry, midsize farms (bread basket)


Climate/Geography - Moderate weather, able to grow some crops like wheat, barley, corn and fruit. Mined Iron ore


Social - Somewhat embraced Industrial revolution, abolished slavery in 1700's. --Economically and socially centered around town & church, to an extant


-Education was somewhat important

Southern Colonies - Economic/Social/Climate/Geography

Economy - Agriculture and slavery


Climate/Geography- long summers. fertile soil. grew cash crops like tobacco, corn and rice.


Social - Never embraced the Industrial Revolution, too reliant on slaves. -Relied on slavery till after the civil war. Economically and socially centered around slavery and the plantation, no big cities or towns. Self sufficient plantations, neighbors lived far away.


-Education was different, only those who could afford private tutors were educated, Boys learned to ride horses and hunt.

Triangular Trade, Middle Passage

Triangular Trade - The trade of technology from Europe to Africa, Slaves from Africa to Colonies and Raw Materials from the Colonies to Europe


The Middle Passage - The voyage of slaves from Africa to the colonies across the Atlantic Ocean. It took about 3 months and the slaves were stuffed in the ships so tight they couldn't stand up. Brutal conditions, Large quantities of them died on the journey.

Impacts of French & Indian War

-British won, but had a lot of debit, so they started to rely on the colonies to pay them back.


-French presence goes away, English have more land, Indians worse off


-10,000 British troops were left in the colonies that began to meddle with the colonist's affairs.


-Begins the action/reaction cycle that leads to the Revolution

Actions/Reactions leading up to Revolution

-12 years of tension before the war began


-Sugar act 1764 taxed all sugar and molasses. Stamp Act 1765 taxed all paper goods, documents, newspapers etc..., These items were boycotted.


-Boston Massacre was when 5 colonists were killed during a protest by the Custom House. Paul Revere made propaganda displaying colonists being shot by British troops. This was in order to rile up the colonists and get them to want to fight.


Britain declared the Tea Act which eliminated taxes on British tea, but taxed American tea. Colonists reacted with the Boston Tea Party, Britain reacted with the Intolerable Acts and quartering acts. This lead to Lexington and Concord, and then the war.

Bill of Rights- Amendments I-X

Bill Of Rights - was a compromise to settle the Anti-Federalist's fears of a constitution. It protected individual rights.

Religion - Establishment Clause - Gov can't establish a state established religion. --No law can be passed in favor of a religion over another Separation of Church and State.


Free Exercise Clause- people can practice any religion they want.


Speech- People can say what they want. Press- The press can publish what they want. Assembly- People can assemble in a group, also includes freedom to associate. and Petition- the right people have to make a complaint and seek assistance with the gov

-If someone is accused of a capitol crime, they have a right to a grand jury to determine if there is enough evidence to go on trial.


-Double Jeopardy - You can't be tried twice for the same crime.


-Not forced to testify against yourself, (Plead the Fifth)


-Miranda Rights - rights told to you when arrested.


-Due Process- you can't be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of the law.


-Eminent Domain- Private property can't be taken by the gov. without proper compensation.

Amendment 6 (VI) rights of accused

Speedy Public Trial- if you commit a crime, you are entitled to a speedy and public trial.


Impartial Jury- (voir dire=True Voice) Jury get's questioned by both sides to ensure that the jury isn't partial on either side.


-You must be told what you are accused of before the trial.


-The accused can question the witness


-You can have a witness testify for you

The clause to expand the power of the Federal Government


Congress can also do anything necessary to properly carry out their duty.


(the constitution says the federal gov can raise an army, but doesn't say there can be a draft, this clause allows the federal gov to stretch their power to have a draft.)

Louisiana Purchase

-Jefferson bought the land from the Mississippi River all the way to the Rocky Mountains from Napoleon for $15M.


Napoleon gave him such a good deal because he wanted out because he lost Haiti and he needed the money to fund his war.


-Doubled the U.S Territory and gained the Port of New Orleans


-First time a President used Inherent Powers


Biggest Real Estate deal in history


Lewis and Clark were hired by Jefferson to explore, map and report back on the new land.



Oregon Trail

-The trail that went from St. Louis to Oregon, primary trail for westward expansion.


-A land trail was needed for people to travel on conestoga wagons


Dangers included Native Americans, weather, disease, crossing rivers and getting through the mountains before winter

Indian Removal Act - Trail of Tears

-Passed in 1830 by President Andrew Jackson (Not a friend of Indians)


-Removed ALL natives from the east coast, moving them inland, where it's less developed and less white men live there.


-Natives resisted the act, fought a war and lost


-The land the white people wanted was fertile and had gold.

Texas Independence

Texas was originally part of Mexico. Mexico allowed Americans to settle there. Americans living there did not follow the rules given to them by the Mexican Gov. like learning Spanish, becoming catholic and not having slaves, even though they promised.


The Mexicans won the Battle of the Alamo, killing everyone in it


Texas gains independence, but doesn't become a state for 9 years because it was a slave state and would have unbalanced the votes.


Mexican-American War was due to border disputes about Texas's border

Mexican-American War

Between 1846-1848, over land. In 1945, Texas becomes part of the U.S and Mexico is not happy. President Polk is pro slavery and allows Texas in.


-Polk wants to start a war so he sends troops into the disputed area.


-Mexicans chase soldiers across Rio Grande into U.S territory and Congress declares war.


-In the end, America gets a lot of land


Gold Rush

-In 1848, gold is discovered in California and the Gold Rush begins.


-People from all over the country rush west in hope of finding gold.


-Miners spent long hours standing in cold water, bent over, panning gold.


-Many miners had Gold Fever, an obsession with finding gold.


-Most miners didn't make money.


-All the real money was made by the people who supplied and serviced the miners.

Slavery Compromises

Missouri Compromise (1820),


-Any land that was received during the Louisiana Purchase was part of it


-States that all states North of Missouri would be free and any states south would be slave.




When Missouri becomes a slave state, Maine becomes a free state to even it out.
