What problems did the population growth create for the government?
Gaborone had planned population of 20,000 but exceeded in 1970s due to rapid growth. Government cannot afford to provide services such as water, electricity, housing, schools and hospitals.
What housing problems are created for the people?
People have to wait over 10 years for a house from the BHC which results in shantytowns being built out of cardboard, wood e.t.c on the edges of the city.
What problems with employment are created?
Unemployment is growing in the cities which means there are not enough jobs to go around and people are formed to take jobs in the informal sector.
What problems with traffic are created?
Congestion is a huge problem in the cities and it creates extreme air pollution along with factories and the air pollution is damaging to the health of the population.
What problems with HIV/AIDS are in the city?
It's increasing in towns and rural areas due to it being brought in from neighbouring South Africa and Zimbabwe.
How is the government attempting to respond to these problems?
-Trying to sell affordable, fully serviced plots of land.
-New roads being built to ease congestion
-Rural area being provided with employment to reduce urbanisation.
-Health facilities are being expanded.
