autonomic innervation
Damage to left Brodman's area 8 produces what symptoms
Pt can't look CL to left (to the right); eyes tend to deviate to the left (look at the lesion)

i.e. left hemisphere innerviates left medial rectus and right lateral rectus, preventing the eyes from looking right
MLF Syndrome/Internuclear Opthalmoplegia
Pt has on lateral conjugate gaze (can't look medially when trying to look one way or the other) - but pt can still converge eyes since this does not utilize MLF
Parinaud Syndrome
Pupillary constriction and paralysis of vertical gaze following lesions close to the superior colliculus;

note difference between MLF syndrome bc MLF is not involved so lateral conjugate gaze is still intact
Holmes-Adie pupil
How can corneal irritation be produced by hyperthyroidism?
Lack of moisture secondary to increased sympathetic activity produced by hyperthyroidism (designed fluid production by lacrimals)
By which vein can bacteria enter the cavernous sinuses?
superior opthalmic vein
Nerves in the cavernous sinus (superior to inferior within lateral wall)
What is the only nerve WITHIN the cavernous sinus (not in the lateral wall)
abducent nerve (VI); along w sympathetic plexus and the internal carotid artery
Which part of the brain in MS would produce a central scotoma
Retrobulbar neuritis
Glaucoma
Note the swelling of the
eyeball and protrusion of the cornea.
Note the cloudy color of the eye.

Glaucoma is a disease involving
destruction of the retinal ganglion
cells, often due to increased intra-
ocular pressure.

Untreated glaucoma leads to optic
neuropathy and loss of vision.
Principal mechanism of aqueous humor production and secretion
active secretion via ciliary endothelium
Aqueous humor drainage
80-90% through trabecular meshwork (conventional)
10-20% through viliary body face (uveoscleral or alternative pathway)
trabecular meshwork
thought to be region when regulation of aqueous humor outflow takes place
what part of the aqeous humor flow regulates production
trabecular meshwork
What secretes aqeous humor
ciliaryepithelium
where is the blockage in open angle glaucoma?
canal of schlemm obstruction; often painless bc of slow onset + considerable vision loss before diagnosis
where is blockage in closed-angle glaucoma?
inflammatory process of the uvea (uveitis) blocks fluid acess to the meshwork drain
musca volans
(latin "flying fly") also called floater; condensations of vitreous humor
