Basics of cells

Every cell must come from a pre-existing cell

Must occur to replace old cells or make new cells for growth

Just like humans cells go through a life cycle

Interphase

Longest phase(98%) of the cell cycle

Includes G1 phase, "s" phase, and G2 phase

G1 Phase

Cell growth

"S" phase

Synthesis phase, DNA replication

G2 phase

Cell growth and prep for division by making centrioles

DNA

Is a nucleic acid

Monomer: Nucleotide

Three parts: Phosphate, sugar, and nitrogen base(A=T, C=G)

DNA is double stranded held together by hydrogen bonds( hold the base pairs of DNA together

DNA replication

DNA "unzips" hydrogen bonds by an enzyme

New nucleotides are added to create a new strand of DNA

Give the complimentary replicated strand

ATG-CCA-TGG-AAC

TAC-GGT-ACC-TTG

Mitosis

PMAT

(Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase)

Happens in body cells(Somatic and Diploid)

Prophase

-DNA winds up to form chromosomes

-Nuclear membrane(envelope) dissapears

-Centrioles appear and send out spindle fibers

Metaphase

-Spindle fibers attach to chromosomes and start to pull towards the centrioles

-Chromosomes move to the middles of the cell

Anaphase

Sister chromatids pull apart and towards opposite ends of the cell

Telophase

Sister chromatids reach opposite ends of the cell and unpack into DNA

-Nucleus reappears

-Cell prepares for final division

Cytokinesis

Cytoplasm divides completely creating two identical daughter cells

Animals cells- Cleavage furrow develops

Plant cells- Cell plate forms

Cancer

Caused by uncontrolled cell division
