Empire
A group of countries across the world that is ruled by another country.
Nationalism
The belief in ones own nation, right or wrong.
Imperialism
The belief that nations had the right to conquer other lands and build up an empire.
Colonialism
The control or governing influence of a nation over a dependent country, territory, or people.
Destabilised
This situation occurs when an action damages the status quo between two groups.
Alliances
Agreements between nations that were often based on mutual defence.
Militarism
A belief in the importance of a strong and well prepared army.
Pan-German League
An organisation in Germany that promoted the idea of a Central Europe dominated by a strong German state, including all-German speaking people.
Triple Alliance
The military alliance formed between Germany, Austro-Hungary and Italy in 1882.
Triple Entente
The agreement reached between Great Britain, France and Russia in 1907.
Treaty
A formal agreement made between states, which can be about anything from trade to ending a war.
Arms race
A competition between nations for superiority in the development and accumulation of weapons.

Conscription
Compulsory enlistment for state service, typically into the armed forces.
Dreadnoughts
Name given to a type of warship, named after HMS Dreadnought, launched in 1906. Building these ships was a key part in the arms race between Germany and Britain before WW1.

Sphere of influence
A country or area in which another country has power to affect developments though it has no formal authority.
Rebellion
A violent attack against the government
Compensate
To give someone something, often money, to make up for the loss of something.
Revolution
An overthrow or repudiation and the thorough replacement of an established government or political system by the people governed.
Annex
To incorporate territory into the domain of a city, country, or state.
Crisis
An unstable and dangerous situation affecting an individual, group, community, or whole society.
The Black Hand
A terrorist group formed in 1910 that wanted to unite all Serbs living in the Balkans into a single 'Greater Serbia'.

Ultimatum
A final demand or statement of terms, the rejection of which will result in retaliation or a breakdown in relations.
Delegates
A person sent or authorized to represent others, in particular an elected representative sent to a conference.

Ally
A state formally cooperating with another for a military or other purpose.
Armistice
An agreement made by opposing sides in a war to stop fighting for a certain time; a truce.

Reparations
The compensation for war damage paid by a defeated state.

Communism
A theory or system of social organization in which all property is owned by the community and each person contributes and receives according to their ability and needs.
Treaty of Versailles
One of the peace treaties at the end of World War I. It ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers.
