1845: The United States admitted Texas as the 28th state of Dec. 29, 1845. President Polk signed the Texas Admission Act
1861: Texans voted to severe ties with the union January 28, 1861.
1861: Sam Houston was removed as governor, and Edward Clark was appointed in his place
Battle of Gonzales: October 1, 1835: was the first battle of the Texas Revolution. Mexican forces were ordered to take a brass cannon from the town of Gonzales to San Antonio
Battle of San Jacinto: April 21, 1836: Texans defeatd the Mexican forces and caputured General Santa Anna. Ended the Texas Revolution. Treaty of Velasco, Santa Anna agreed to stop fighting the Texans and support the independence of texas
Buffalo Soldiers: The units of black soldiers who protected the settlers in west Texas from the Texas Plains Indians in the Red River Wars from 1874-75. Raided the Apaches in the Rio Grande Valley.
Civil Rights and Equal Rights:
Civil rights are legal and political rights enjoyed by the inhabitants of a country.
To achieve equal rights is a struggle
1970's the Equal Rights Amendment was proposed by the US congress.
Civil War: is a war between factions or sections within a country. US Civil War 1861-1865:
disagreements of the continuance of slavery, the sovereignty of the states and the conflicting economic and social structures of the North and South
The admission of Texas as a slave states in 1845 marked the first significant westward expansion envisioned by President Polk
The Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo transferred more western territory to the United States and reinvigorated the sectional conflict over the expansion of slavery into territories.
Fear over the ability of the United States to protect the Texas-Mexico border caused some Texans to rethink their allegiances. January 28, 1861: convention delegates voted to secede from the Union and join the Confederate States of America
Convention of 1836: Gathering of a group of men at Washington-on-the-Brazos. They adopted the Texas Declaration of Independence of March 2, 1836
Fannin's Surrender at Goliad: James Fannin came to Texas in 1834 and commanded the Texas army at the Battle of Concepcion in October 1835.
1836: Fannin was stationed in Goliad with 400 soldiers: Fannin and his troops were captured by General Urrea o March 20 and executed on the order of Santa Anna on March 27. "Remember Goliad" became a Texas battle cry

Reconstruction Era (1867-1877):
post Civil War the US confronted the problems of readmitting the states to the Union.
South was in ruins.
Some believed in reformation, others didn't. President Lincoln was assissinated in 1865
Andrew Johnson took Lincoln's place as president.
Civil Rights Act in 1866: advocated the radical approach.didn't pass
However, the therory behind it gained popularity and was passed in the Reconstruction Act of 1867
14th Amendment--all adult men able to vote
Emancipation (freeing) of the slaves left thousands of people without work
Civil Rights Act of 1964_ equalized treatment of blacks and women
Siege of the Alamo: January 17, 1836, Sam Houston ordered James Bowie to remove ammunition from the Alamo and destroy it
Bowie didn't mind Houston's orders, and stood his ground.
the Battle at the Alamo was from February 24 till March 6 then the Mexican army broke through the wall.
Remember the Alamo became a battle cry of Texas independence
Supply and Demand: Supply is the amount of goods available and demand is the desire to own something and the ability to pay for it.
This works only if the market is free from price regulations imposed by the government
Texas Bill of Rights: The document specifies the basic rights protected by the Texas constitution: freedom of speech, freedom or religion, freedom of press and the right to trial by jury. this was included in the Constitution of 1836
Texas Constitution: 1836: passed March 2, 1836: it established 3 braches of government with limited powers, protect individual rights, and promote the common good.
Texas Rangers: were the first used to protect settlers moving into west Texas in the 1830's
They continue to serve as special law officers responsible for keeping peace throughout the state
Texas Revolution: a political revolution is an attempt to overthrow a government: residents of Texas joined forces to challenge the rule of Santa Anna and Mexican military authority in 1835
The Battle of Gonzales on October 2, 1835 was the first battle in the Texas REvolution.
Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo: ended the Mexican War 1846-1848. Mexico recognized Texas as a states and gave up any claims to the territory
Turtle Bayou Resolutions: 1832 challenged the imprisionment of 3 men for violating the policies of a Mexican official.
