equilibrium

state where the relevant physical properties of a system are balanced

- forces are balanced

- no resultant moment (net moment = 0)

moment

moment = force X perpendicular distance from point to line of action of force

- SI unit: Nm

- turning effect = moment = torque

- when perpendicular distance is greatest (furthest from pivot), small force is needed to produce big moment

determining direction

1) locate force

2) locate pivot

determining distance

1) locate pivot & force

2) draw line from pivot to line of action of force

3) draw dotted line connecting force to pivot perpendicularly

principle of moments

when a body is in equilibrium, sum of clockwise moment = sum of anticlockwise moment

F1 X D1 = F2 X D2

center of gravity

- point where the whole weight acts on to orientate the object

- position of center of gravity affects its stability

- when pivot is not at center of gravity, sum of moment will cause object to rotate

stability

- measure of a body's ability to maintain its original position

- stable : object always returns to original point after being displaced slightly

- neutral : if displaced, object will remain where it is displaced

- unstable : object continuously moves

- increase stability by increasing base area & lowering center of gravity

instability

- when an object is pushed until the line of action of the force acting on it is beyond the area of its base, the object wil topple over
