What is a tsunami?

It is like a massive tidal wave but morehigher and bigger.

The bigger the tsunami the more pressureit produces.

•Thename ‘tsunami’ is a Japanese word that means “harbor wave”.“Tsu” means Harbour and “nami”means Wave.:

TSUNAMIS

How are tsunamis made?

•Tsunamis are made by a earthquake.

•Tsunamis are EXTREMLY DANGERUOS becausethe take the lives of mostly 1500 each time on happens on earth.

TSUNAMIS

•Mostly the tsunami is made by aearthquake on the ocean floor that moves the water towards the beach and movesthe water up witch makes the tsunami.

TSUNAMIS

Japan,march,11,2011

In Japan a massive earthquake hit causing a massive tsunami killing over 5000 people.

The earthquake was a magnitude-9 witch caused the tsunami that was huge.

TSUNAMIS

Because of the tsunami any house next to the beach was knocked down and only a handful of houses made it through the tsunami and earthquake.

TSUNAMIS

Damage

Tsunamis are so strong that they have the power to knock down a whole building. The tsunami in 2004 was huge it took over 5000 lives.Unfortunately we have no way of stopping tsunamis so 90% of the time it means that places with tsunamis have to evacuate.

TSUNAMIS

Items used to track tsunamis and how they work

Here are 2 of the many tsunami trackers that are used to track tsunamis.

TSUNAMIS

The buoy,(the part that you can see on top of the ocean) tracks the wave motions. if the waves have a certain motion than the buoy will send a message of how big the motion is to a satellite.

TSUNAMIS

Next the message is beamed back to a tsunami warning center and than the motion message is checked by the owners of the center.Next the center passes the message to the public.

TSUNAMIS

This can be done by news, Facebook websites, and phones.

TSUNAMIS

How to avoid tsunamis

There are some special buildings that are high in pillars so the water can not knock it down. The pillars are screwed into the ground so the water can not knock down the pillars.

TSUNAMIS

The pillars are super long so they go down about 1 story's worth of depth into the ground. But the best thing to do is get to high ground.

TSUNAMIS

How do we know when a tsunami is going to happen?

Like 2 slides ago. There are many types of buoys used to track water motion and send that to the weather center. If there is a potential flood than you should evacuate you home and move to a high ground area.

TSUNAMIS

Indian Ocean, December 26 2004

On Boxing Day 2004 a huge earthquake in the Indian Ocean created the deadliest tsunami in world history resulting in the deaths of more than 275,000 people in India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, The Maldives, South Africa and Indonesia.Within twenty minutes of the earthquake, tsunami waves started to hit Banda Aceh where 31,000 people were killed.

TSUNAMIS

How bad are the tsunamis and earthquakes in Vietnam

The chance of a tsunami and earthquake in Vietnam is low but does happen some times. The damage there Is not much but is enough to put so shops out of order. This means that food and clothing is sometimes ripped and/or destroyed.
