- The Allied Forces
- Germany
What did the treaty earn the Allies?
- Money ($500B NZD)
- Land (Access to the ocean given to poland, colonies taken from outside of Germany)
- Resources (coal and other minerals from German soil)
What did Germany lose from the treaty?
Military
- Army reduced to 100,000 men
- Navy reduced to 15,000 men
- 6 Battleships
- 6 Cruisers
- 12 Destroyers
- 12 Torpedo boats
- No importing/exporting weapons
- No armoured cars/gas etc.
Who were the Big Three?
- Clemenceau (France)
- Woodrow Wilson (America)
- David Lloyd George (Britain)
How harsh was the treaty?
It was debated largely between the Big Three (U.K, U.S & France). Clemenceau (France), wanted to completely destroy Germany, as they were enraged from the consequences they had from the war. However, Woodrow Wilson (U.S), wanted to achieve world peace, and to have Germany given a fair peace to end war. This left David Lloyd George in the middle, as he wanted to punish Germany, but not execute revenge. This caused the treaty to be somewhere between too harsh, and not harsh enough. This harshness caused Germany to revolt against it, but it wasn't harsh enough to stop them from doing so.
What consequences did the treaty have?
It helped bring Hitler to power, as he used Germany's weakness from the consequences as an easy way to bring himself to power, then, as the Big Three didn't care enough to stop him, he stopped paying reparation and began to build back their army. This ended up causing World War 2, twenty years later.
