Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

-PTSD results from exposure to traumatic events in adults and children


- most often from combat but can be from actual or threatened death.serious injury. sexual violence


-trauma can come from a personal traumatic event, witnessing or learning it happen/ed to others you love, repeated exposure to details of the event, or electronic exposure as part of your job

What is considered traumatic?

A traumatic event is something that was detrimental that interferes with your normal functioning

When do I develop PTSD?

- patients often show symptoms after a period of time


- patients often experience negative symptoms of shame or guilt

PTSD clusters

1) intrusive sx.- memories, flashbacks, dreams, visual cues


2) avoidance sx.- just avoid traumatic events or their cues


3) negative change in mood/cognition sx.- dissociative amnesia, neg. beliefs, anhedonia


4) change in arousal/ reactivity sx.- irritability, anger, hypervigilance, poor sleep, poor concentration

Types of trauma

1)combat( wars)


2)natural disasters (flood, hurricanes, tornadoes)


3)contrived disasters ( 9/11, rape, failed marriage)

Risk factors for PTSD

-age


- low educational attainment


- low SES


- proximity to trauma


- low IQ


- prolonged exposure to trauma


-previous psychiatric hx.


-family hx.


-ethnic minorities

Miscellaneous info. about PTSD

-cormorbid with substance use d/os, depression, anxiety, T.B.I.'s


- in order to be diagnosed you have to have sx. for at least 1 month


- younger people are more likely to be diagnosed


- women tend to experience higher rates of PTSD than men


- 50% recover in a few months

Treatment for PTSD

- immediate processing is not recommended ...safety/ practical concerns should be #1 concern


-CBT can be used as well as meds


-E.M.D.R can also be used

Adjustment Disorder

-must encounter a trauma/stressor


-found in all cultures and age groups

Symptoms of Adjustment Disorder

- low mood


-crying spells/feel like crying


-feeling nervous or panicky


-changes in behavior

Duration of Adjustment Disorder

-symptoms must arrive within 3 months but must not last beyond y months


-if left untreated it can turn into PTSD


- most people return to full function within a year w/o help
