Transition Metal

A d-block element that forms an ion with an incomplete d sub-shell

Complex ion

A transition metal ion bonded to one or more ligands by coordinate bonds

Ligand

A molecule or ion that can donate a pair of electrons with the transition metal ion to form a coordinate bond

Coordination number

The total number of coordinate bonds formed between a central metal ion and its ligands

Stereoisomers

Species with the same structural formula but with a different arrangement of the atoms in space

Stability Constant

Equilibrium constant for an equilibrium existing between a transition metal ion surrounded by water ligands and the complex formed when the same ion has undergone a ligand substitution

Why are transition metals good as catalysts

1. Provide a surface for reactants to adsorb onto and hold onto them until the reaction is complete before the products are desorbed

2. Transition metals have the ability to change oxidation states. They can bind to reactants forming intermediates as part of a chemical pathway with a lower activation energy

Co2+ reacting with NaOH

Pink solution -> Blue precipitate turning beige in air

Co2+ + 2OH- ---> Co(OH)2

Fe2+ reacting with NaOH

Pale green solution -> green precipitate turning rusty brown upon standing in air

Fe2+ -> 2OH- ---> Fe(OH)2

Fe3+ reacting with NaOH

Pale yellow solution -> rusty brown precipitate

Fe3+ + 3OH- ---> Fe(OH)3
