Air/Electric Lines (Tractor)

Check for air leaks. Hoses not cut, chafed, spliced, or worn (no steel braid showing) Lines not tangled, pinched, or dragging against tractor parts.

Catwalk

Solid, clear of objects, securely bolted

Solid, clear of objects, securely bolted

Mounting bolts

Loose or missing mounting brackets, clamps, bolts, or nuts. Both the fifth wheel and the slide mounting must be solidly attached.

Hitch Release Lever

In place, and secure.

Locking Jaws

Look into 5th wheel and check jaws are around the kingpin. Inspect locking mechanism for missing or broken parts and make sure locked securely. Safety cables and chains must be secure and free of kinks and excessive slack.

5th Wheel Skid Plate

Proper lubrication, securely mounted to the platform, all bolts and pins are secure and not missing.

Platform (Fifth Wheel)

Cracks, or breaks in the platform structure

Release Arm (Fifth Wheel)

Engaged position, safety latch in place.

Kingpin/Apron/Gap

Explain that locking jaws hold kingpin in place and kingpin is not bent or damaged. Visible part of apron not bent, cracked, or broken. Trailer is laying flat on skid Plate (no gap). Check for kingpin lock.

Locking Pins (Fifth Wheel)

Loose or missing pins in the slide mechanism, if air powered check for leaks. Pins fully engaged. 5th Wheel is positioned properly so tractor frame will clear the landing gear during turns.
