What war indirectly affected Lubicon Cree? When did it happen? Between who?

In 1973 in the middle east the Yom Kippur War broke out between with two sides, Israel and Egypt with Syria.

Why did the war cause oil prices to go up? How much did it go up by?

The oil prices going up is related to the war because the U.S and European countries supported Israel, while Saudi Arabia and many other oil rich countries of the middle east support Egypt and Syria. As the U.S and Europe were against the oil producing countries, they were cut off reviving oil. This resulted in a low supply and high demand which caused oil prices to quadruple, while causing energy shortages in the U.S.

What group were the oil rich middle east countries in?

OPEC, Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries

How were the Lubicon Cree involved in this complication?

Oil was found in 1952 in their traditional hunting/fishing grounds, which led the U.S over to Alberta in the energy crisis, because the oil and gas in their territory became very valuable at the time.

How did the U.S respond to the energy crisis?

They went went to Lubicon Cree to retrieve the oil found there in 1973.

What did the Alberta government respond to the U.S energy crisis? Did they help them or hinder them?

The Alberta Government helped set up roads in the area to help resource move into Lubicon Cree.

Where exactly did the oil companies set up their oil wells?

On top of the Lubicon's traditional hunting and fishing ground.

What other companies moved in other than oil companies?

A sour gas plant and the Daishowa Paper Manufacturing Co.

How much land were the paper manufacturing plant give rights to? Where was the majority of this land?

In 1988, they got 30000 square km of logging rights primarily in the Lubicon Cree area.

How many trees were cut when the plant was set up?

11000 trees per day

How did the companies moving in affect the Lubicon's way of life?

The companies moved into where they traditionally hunted and fished, and they destroyed forests which destroyed animal populations. This resulted in the many Lubicon Cree members to not being able to sustain themselves financially, as their main source of income was trapping. The annual amount of moose harvested went from 219 to 19.

After the companies moved in, how many Lubicon were on welfare compared to before? What was their income compared to before?

Their income went from $5000 to $400 after the companies moved in. The welfare rate went from less than 10% to more than 90% after companies moved in.

What was the root of the conflict? Who's fault was it?

The root of the conflict is treaty 8, when it was being signed by the Federal Government and the First Nations. The Lubicon Cree were overlooked and didn't sign treaty 8. Primary the fault lays in the Federal Government.

What is crown land?

Land that is owned by the Gov, therefore they collect royalties and other related fees to the development of crown land.

Who has right's to the Lubicon Territory?

Since the Lubicon didn't sign treaty 8 in 1899, the land is technically Crown Land, owned by the Canadian Gov. and all the royalties and fees go to them instead of the Lubicon Cree (which is why they are dependent on well-fare with all the companies around their territory)

How many years have the Lubicon been trying to fix the oversight/sign the contract? Why?

100 years, unsuccessfully. They wanted to affirm their identity as First Nations to get their land back and royalties from the developments that destroyed their life.

How much money did the resource companies make? How much money did the Alberta gov. make? How much money did the Lubicon make?

$13 billion for the resource companies. $2.6 billion for the Alberta Gov. The Lubicon made $0 from royalties.

What tactic did the AB Gov. use to prevent the Lubicon Cree from signing the treaty?

In 1942, they denied the Lubicon Cree their identity as a separate Aboriginal nation. They decided that some of the members were not Aboriginal people and deleted their names from the band list.

When did the Lubicon launch a campaign to make the AB and CA gov recognize their right/identity claim?

In 1980, Chief Bernard Ominayak and many other Lubicon wanted the gov to recognize their claim, compensate them for what they lost and grant them a reserve on the shore of Lubicon Lake.

What international organizations support the Lubicon?

World Concil of Churches, Amnesty International, and United Nations HUman Rights Committee,
