Hey, grease

How come you're all by yourself, grease?

Couldn't think of it.

Not safe for you to be out here all alone.

Shut him up.

(Looking off L.) I see someone-

Okay, greaser!

Cool it, Bob!

He's asking.

(Gestures L.) Company coming-

Have to give you another appointment, grease! Catch you later.

(Hurry along off R.)

The blue Mustang.

(BOB and RANDY are coming in R. They don't seem to see the GREASERS.)

Cherry, Marcia, listen to us-

You're making a big deal out of nothing.

You're not hearing very good. I said never!

(Reasoning). Cherry-Marcia-

Next time pick your own kid- dirt.

Listen, greasers, we got four more in the back seat.

Then pity the back seat.

If you're looking for a fight-

Too late.

Hey, I asked you-

You mean if I'm looking for a good jumping, you outnumber us, so you'll give it to us.

(Shouts back to the car). Hey-

You touch I kid, I'll call the police.

Hold it a minute.

I know that. Randy knows that.

(RANDY is coming on R where he stops and watches.)

Maybe sometime.

(Calls to PONYBOY.) Can we talk?

You know the rules. No jazz before the rumble.

I know the rules. (PONYBOY looks st TWO-BIT who shrugs.)

Meet me at the car pretty quick. We have to see Johnny.

I read about you in the paper. How come?

Maybe I feel like playing hero.

(Bothered). I wouldn't have done it. I'd a let those kids burn to death.

You might not have. You might have done the same thing.

I can't believe a greaser could pull something like that.

Greaser didn't have anything to do with it! Two-Bit wouldn't've done it. Maybe you would. It's the individual.

Maybe you're right. (Takes a breath.) I'm not going to show at the rubble tonight. I'm sick of all of this. And no matter what you think, Bob was a good guy. He had a problem, but he was a real person.

How could you know that?

You couldn't, and now he's dead. His mother had a total breakdown.

Who's to blame?

All I know, they spoiled him; They gave in to him all the time. He kept trying to make someone say "No" and they never did. He needed somebody to lay down the laws, set limits, give him something to stand on. ( Tries to grin, but he's close to tears.) One time he came home drunker than anything- falling down disgusting. He thought sure they'd raise the roof. (It's so absurd.) Know what they did? They said it was thier fault, they'd failed him, they took the blame. Maybe if his father had given him a belt instead, he'd still be alive.

(With a small smile.) Only person ever told Bob "No" was Cherry Valance. No wonder he was so crazy about her.

I have to go to the hospital.

That kid-your buddy-he might die?

He might.

And tonight-people get hurt in rumbles, maybe killed. And it doesn't do any good. Even if you whip us, you'll still be at the bottom and we'll still be the lucky ones with all the breaks. Greasers will still be greasers, and Socs will still be Socs. I'm going to get out of this town.

Running away won't help.

(In a bind). I'm marked chicken if I punk out at the rumble, and I hate myself if I didn't. So what can I do?

I'd help if I could.

No you wouldn't. I'm a Soc. You get a little money and the whole world hates you.

I have to go a. You'd have saved those kids, same as we did.

Thanks, grease. (He stops.) I didn't mean that. I meant, thanks, kid.

Nice talking to you, Randy.

(RANDY gives a brief wave, then hurries off.)

He was like that when he got drunk.

(RANDY has come forward and CHERRY steps back.)

(After stepping foward.)

Sir, it was our fault. They only fought back when it looked like Bob was about to kill Ponyboy. It was self defense. (CHERRY and RANDY turn and go off, BOTH of them disturbed but keeping control.)
