Describe night soil men. What did they do? Why did they do it?
London was infested with night soil (sewage, poo, junk.) Many people scavenged through this to find bones, poo, rags, etc... so they could sell it. The scavengers were the lowest of the lowest class.
What two factors led to the end of the scavenger class?
-Minimum wages
-Government assistance
Why was London a "Victorian" metropolis trying to make do with an "Elizabethan" infrastructure?
Even though London was in Victorian times, people still lived as Elizabethans. The streets were crowded with sewage and the population was high. Techniques for managing such a population density had not been invented yet.
