Design of the dental office

A dental office will have designated rooms to accommodate the needs of the dental team to function on a daily basis. The size and design will determined by number of dentists and local business professionals practicing.

Areas of the dental office

Reception area - should make patients feel at home and relax then before treatment - receive and greet patients - should have magazines for patients to look at


Admin area - runs the management of business side of the practice - should have business supplies, desk, etc


Treatment area - dental treatment takes place in the dental operatory , area of concentration where all clinical procedures take place. Should include comfort and mobility for dental team members, privacy, comfort, enhanced use of dental equipment through time management and effort techniques


Central sterilization- hub where instruments are maintained,cleaned, sterilized and stored


Dental laboratory - organized around work benches and storage. In the lab you pour impressions, prepare X-rays, models, impressions. Infection control is huge in this area so must be cleaned at all times

Temp - reception area should be 72F and clinical area should be lower 68-70F - air exchange should remain constant throughout office


Lighting - decorative lighting in reception and more ideal in clinical most office use fluorescent - proves less heat. LED is the new greener way and more dentists are choosing the option gives more of a whiter turner light.


Wall and floor covering - should be colours that are calm and relaxing. Carpet can be in certain areas but preferred not.


Traffic control - every thing should be organized/arranged nicely for traffic flow in all areas of the office. Separate areas of the desk for check in / check out. Enter and edits should be designed well

Patient dental chair - designed for comfort, neutral position for operator, adjustable, seamless, few visible mechanical parts for easy cleaning. When patient is seated the knees bottom and lunar region of back should be fully supported and headrest holds the head. Up right position and subsupine


Operator stool - support body for a prolonged period. Large seat and a back easily adjustable lumbar support, cushion comfortably support operations body, higher and lower option, easy to move


Dental assistant stool - provide stability and mobility and comfort and allow assistant to assist using proper fatigued reducing posture. Foot ring/platform, firm secure cushion and abdominal support bar


Dental unit - types selected based on space available, and operators preferred method of delivery, weather the dentist is left/right handed, whether dentist works primarily with or without chairside assist- unit hold necessary electrical and air operated hoses and hand prices for working. Has a master which and each attachment has it’s on control over how much air and water is issued


Delivery systems - front allows dental unit to be positioned over patients chest so dentist isn’t twisting or body, side allows unit to be positioned on either side of the patients body, unit provides different sections for dentist and assistant, rear delivery positioned behind the dental chair near back of patients head


Rheostat - controls the handpeices. Foot controlled device the placed on floor for dentist to put force on when needed.


Waterlines - dental unit is designed with water lines that carry water through the air way syringe and dental hand piece. Crucial for keeping the teeth clean and cooled against the heat caused my hand pieces


Air water syringe - delivers steam of water, stream of air, or a combo


Operating light - bright light, moveable


Oral evaluation system - used to remove. Contains saliva extractor or high volume evaluator - saliva removes excess fluids from mouth and for less invasive procedures. HVE is more powerful and helps maintain a clear field which the dentist can work in, new tip use used per patient and covered with protectant


Curling light - wandlike attachment to harder of cure light sensitive dental materials. Components of the light include protective shield handle, trigger switch , has different light sensitivity

Central vacuum compressor - provides suction needed for oral evacuation systems. Consists of compressor and vacuum tank which screens the flow of air to create suction, should be serviced regular and kept up with manufactures instructions


Central air compressor - provide compressed air for the air water syringe and air driven hand pieces. Due to nose reasons it’s place away from the clinical area, change filters and check for condensation in the lines if there is condensation then it should be serviced.

Goal in the evening is to leave the office ready for patient care the next morning failure to complete these steps could result in loss productive time for the dentist, discomfort for patient and uncesscary stres
