what are the assumptions of the cognitive approach?

The cognitive approach: the study of internal mental processes, the role of schema, the use of theoretical and computer models to explain and make inferences about mental processes.

what does 'inference' mean?

going beyond the immediate evidence to make assumptions about mental processes that cannot be directly observed

what is the informational processing model?

information flows through the cognitive system in a sequence of stages that include an input, storage, retrieval of information.

eg:multi store memory model

what is the computer model?

Sees human beings as processors much like computersi.e. receiving sensory information, encoding it in a usable format, then processing it and coordinating an appropriate response and/or sorting it

eg: working memory model

what is a schema?

schema use stereotypical thinking so you know things like: this is a chair even tho it doesn't look identical to a chair i have seen before or you enter a fancy restaurant and know how to behave due to schema

what is cognitive nuro science?

Cognitive neuroscience is the scientific study of the influence of brain structure on mental processes. These methods include positron emission topography (PET), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) etc.

evaluation the cognitive approach positive(less deterministic )

it is founded on soft determinism as it recognises that our thought processes may be determined by what we know but our responses can be freely chosen

evaluation the cognitive approach positive (scientific and objective methods)

because cognitive psychologists have been rigorous in their methodology it means they are more likely to have produced valid and reliable results, especially when compared to introspection

evaluation the cognitive approach positive( real life application )

For example, it has helped us understand the role of faulty thought processes in the development of mental disorders such as depression and OCD, this supports its validity

evaluating the cognitive approach negative(lab conditions)

This conveys the argument that the Cognitive Approach lacks real life application and has low external validity.

evaluating the cognitive approach negative(fails to represent complex human brain )

As a result it ignores the role of emotions and motivations that govern a human mind but not a central processing unit of a computer e.g. computers don’t make mistakes, nor chose to ignore data or forget
