parietal lobe
superior lobe of the brain. Separated from the frontal lobe by the central sulcus, from the temporal lobe by the lateral sulcus, and from the occipital lobe by the parieto-occipital sulcus
occipital lobe
Posterior-most lobe of the brain. Separated from the parietal lobe by the parieto-occipital sulcus.
longitudinal fissure
deep fissure dividing right and left hemispheres of the brain
central sulcus
windy groove (sulcus) that separates the anterior and posterior aspects of the brain. Ends at the lateral sulcus.
lateral sulcus
groove separating the inferior and superior aspects of the brain.
precentral gyrus
ridge running just anterior to the central sulcus in the frontal lobe.
postcentral gyrus
ridge running just posterior to the central sulcus in the parietal lobe.
somatosensory association area
location - immediately posterior to the postcentral gyrus
function - interprets stimuli
primary motor area
location - precentral gyrus
function - voluntary movement of skeletal muscles
primary somatosensory area
location - postcentral gyrus
function - receives pain/pressure/temperature impulses
prefrontal cortex
location - anterior inferior aspect of frontal lobe
function - intelect, reasoning, personality
auditory association area
location - posterior to primary auditory area
function - interpret auditory stimuli
primary visual area
location - posterior-most aspect of occipital lobe
function - receive visual stimuli
visual association area
location - anterior to primary visual area
function - interpret visual stimuli
Primary auditory area
location - inferior to postcentral gyrus and lateral sulcus
function - receives auditory stimuli
frontal lobe
Superior anterior lobe of the brain. Separated from the parietal lobe by the central sulcus, and from the temporal lobe by the lateral sulcus.
temporal lobe
lateral lobe of the brain. Separated from the frontal lobe by the lateral sulcus.
Broca's area
location - anterior to base of precentral gyrus, superior to lateral sulcus
function - specialized motor speech area
