William Travis
A lieutenant who commanded the troops in the battle of the Alamo. He told his men that they face almost certain death. He wrote a letter to the people of the US asking for assistance in which he stated "Victory or Death." He died at the Alamo.

The execution of James Fannin's troops (about 350 men) after they surrendered. The execution was ordered by Santa Anna.

Frontier legend, from Tennessee. Skilled sharpshooter, hunter, and story teller. Wore a coonskin cap. One of the defenders of the Alamo. He survived the battle but was executed.
Runaway scrape
The retreat of the Texans. Families took what they could and left the rest. This was a panic caused by news of the battle of the Alamo and the Goliad massacre

Location of a bridge that Sam Houston burned so that there would be no survivors in the battle of San Jacinto. Built on the Buffalo Bayou river.

Location at the mouth of the Brazos River where Santa Anna was forced to sign the two peace treaties forbidding him to fight Texans and ordering all Mexican forces out of Texas.

Houston knew the Alamo was useless and the battle of the Alamo shouldn't have been fought.
What was the significance of the battle?
It was not a significant battle. However, the battle became a rallying cry for the Texas Army ("Remember the Alamo"). It also weakened Santa Anna's Army.

The Mexican army was sleeping when the Texans attacked. They were surprised by the attack.

This is the most important battle Texas won because they captured Santa Anna and it secured their independence from Mexico. It is one of the most decisive battles in history.
Why did Houston spare Santa Anna's life?
So he could sign the peace treaties and end the battle and make Texas independent. By keeping Santa Anna alive, he could have Santa Anna acknowledge the independence of Texas.
How did the events at the Alamo and Goliad unite Texans in their struggle for independence?
The battles showed Santa Anna's ruthlessness and made everyone wanted to kill him.
What were the terms of the treaties of Velasco?
Mexico was never again to fight against the Texans. Ordered all Mexican forces out of Texas immediately. Exchange of Texas prisoners for Mexican prisoners. Mexico gives back all stolen property.
What were the most important provisions of the treaties of Velasco?
Santa Anna agree to work for Mexican recognition of Texas independence. Texas in return would release Santa Anna and escort him back to Mexico. Santa Anna would work inside Mexico to get the Texas boundary set up at the Rio Grande.
