Max Vandenburg
|
A jew who stays with the Hubermanns. He ends up getting close to Liesel and makes books for her to read. He ends up getting caught and sent to Dayenu, a concentration camp. In the end he and Liesel are reunited.

|
Evil leader of Rudy's Hitler Youth squad. Terrorizes Rudy and Tommy, and eventually breaks Rudy's ribs after Rudy throws a rock at him.

Hans Hubermann
|
Papa. Takes care of Liesel for foster care, but loves her like a dad. Married to Rosa, has silver eyes, and plays the accordian. He was saved by Max's father during WW1. Takes in Max as a favor. As a punishment for giving a man bread, he was accepted into the Nazi Party and sent off to war. In the end dies during the bomb raid.

Rudy Steiner
|
Liesel's best friend whom likes her. Has hair the color of lemons and is always hungry. Jesse Owens incident in youth. Is in Hitler Youth and steals with Liesel. In the end he dies in the air raid.

Rosa Hubermann
|
Mama. Swears and yells to show she cares, and is vulnerable under her tough exterior. Dies in the bomb raid.

Arthur Burg
|
The first leader of the thieves. Lets Liesel and Rudy join them. Nice and fair. Ends up moving away.

Erik Vandenburg
|
Befriends Hans in first war and teaches Hans to play the accordian. Saves Hans' life and Hans tells his family if they ever need a favor go to him.

Ilsa Herman
|
Mayor's wife. Sees Liesel steal and lets her read in the library. Ends up letting Rosa go, Liesel gets mad and she lets Liesel steal from her library. Lives and survives raid.

Viktor Chemmel
|
Second thief gang leader. Nasty. Steals because he wants more, even though he already has more tha enough. Calls Liesel a whore and scams the two. Rudy spits at him.

Walter Kugler
|
Max's friend who he used to fight. He is a Nazi but helps Max escape.

Death
|
Ironic. A good guy even though Death is generally seen as a bad thing. Narrator of the story. He doesn't want to do what he does but someone has got to do it.

|
Known as Hitler. Wants to take over the world with words. Liesel hates him for ruining her family. Ends up killing himself.

|
Rudy's dad. Owned a suit shop. Is sent to war for not letting the Nazi soldiers take Rudy to a school. When returned he realizes what happens. Liesel works with him in the shop.

|
Mother of Michael. Both of her sons die. Liesel reads to her even though she hates Liesel's mother. In the end doesn't go into the basement during a air raid. Dies.

|
Rudy's friend. Has a hearing problem. Is picked on by leaders and classmates.

|
Son of Frau. Kills self for wanting to live while his brother was dead. Jumps from a chair.

Hans Hubermann Jr.
|
Son of Hans. Hitler supporter and a Nazi soldier. He breaks off ties with family because of conflicting beliefs. Implied that he died in Russia.

Reinhold Zucker
|
Wanted Hans' seat in the back so he could be the first out and go to the bathroom. Because of this saves Hans' life and he dies.
