At this point in time, mental health was moving away from psychodynamic therapies and towards medical model-drug therapy and formal systems of diagnosis.

He considers the medicalisation of abnormal behaviour.

ESSAY ON PSYCHIATRY AND HOW IT AFFECTS THOSE WHO EXPERIENCE MENTAL HEALTH. Not a study.

Politicians have decreed that mental illness is a disease just like any other. Szaz claims that mental illness is a disease/disorder of the brain not based on scientific research therefore is a DECEPTION.

Rejects the current medical model. Argues that mental illness is a metaphor. It is a word applied to something that does not literally donote in order to apply a resemblance.

He says if mental illness is found to have a physical cause, it was never a mental illness at all. It was physical.

He says mental illness is the name given to any socially unacceptable and disturbing behaviours.

He claims that all the behaviours we call mental illness are products of the medicalisation of disturbed behaviour. He said it seems we reject the idea that there are bad people in the world and replace it with the idea that bad behaviour is the product of a mental disorder.

He believes that mental illnesses have reasons for their actions and these must be understood. Which must come from the people who respect them and understand their reasons and can help them work through the obstacles they face, not from drugs or medical interventions.

He suggests that people should be allowed to make their own decisions but it has moved towards political control of the treatment of the mentally ill.

CONCLUSIONS:

Psychiatry is a pseudoscience

Mental illness is a myth not a disease that can be scientifically proven.

The old humanistic perspective on the tragic nature of life (some people have trauma and a lot to deal with so display symptoms as they). Has been replaced with modern, dehumanised pseudo-medical one.

It is wrong to treat ‘mentally ill’ as sick regardless of whether they seek help or not. They should have ability to define and control their own lives.

This has impulications for the defence of insanity used by defendants in court - currently crime can be due to a persons mental illness -rejects idea that there are bad peoples in the Seoul’s and supports that bad behaviour is due to a medical disorder.

Over 50 years psychiatry in US has become thouroighly medicalised and politicised meaning mental illness is now seen as a legal concept.
