How are nitriles synthesised?

From haloalkanes with NaCN in ethanol, or from carbonyls with NaCN/H2SO4

Reaction of nitriles with H2

RCN +2H2➡️(Ni catalyst) RCNH2

Reaction of nitriles with water:

Nitrile with H2SO4(aq)➡️ carboxylic acid + NH4+

Alkylation and acylation of benzene:

Benzene+ haloalkane or acyl chloride➡️ benzene with alkane, or with ketone side chain

Uses AlCl3 catalyst.

Purifying organic solid:

Dissolve impure crystals in minimum amount of hot solvent. Filter to remove insoluble impurities. Cool on ice to recrystallise. Filter under reduced pressure. Rinse crystals with ice cold solvent. Leave to dry in an oven.
