Spectral Colors

Colors that become visible when white light passes through a prism: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

Subtractive Color Process

The mixing of pigments and dyes so that all colors of light except the desired color are absorbed (subtracted).

Primary Colors

Secondary Colors

The colors created from mixing two primary colors.

Additive Color Process

The mixing of colored lights so that when some colored lights shine on a surface, they combine (add) to make other colors.

Tertiary Colors, Intermediates

The products of mixing a primary and a secondary color.

Monochromatic Color Scheme

Variations in color based on one color.

Analogous Color Scheme

Variations in color based on colors adjacent to one another on the color wheel.

Complementary Color Scheme

Variations in color based on colors opposite each other on the color wheel.

Triad

Three colors that are equidistant from one another (form an equilateral triangle) on the color wheel.

Tetrad

Four colors that are equidistant from one another (form a square or rectangle) on the color whell.

Hexad

Six colors obtained by choosing every other color on the color wheel.

Chromatic Gray

A neutral gray produced by mixing complementary colors in order to change intensity and value.

Polychromatic

Many different colors in one composition.

Simultaneous Contrast

An effect achieved by placing highly contrasting colors, values, and intensities next to each other; the contrast between colors increases when they are placed next to each other.
