Subatomic particles
Subatomic particles are the smaller parts of an atom
(electron, proton and neutron)
Properties of subatomic particles: Electrons
Symbol: e
Location: In the space surrounding the nucleus
Charge: negative/ -1
Properties of subatomic particles: Protons
Symbol: p
Location: in the nucleus
Charge: positive/ +1
Properties of subatomic particles: Neutrons
Symbol: n
Location: in the nucleus
Charge: neutral/no charge
Atomic number
the number of protons and electrons in an atom
*atomic numbers are always whole numbers
Atomic mass
the total number of protons and neutrons in an atom
*atomic mass= no. of protons+ no. of neutrons
Isotope
-Atoms of the same element that have a different number of neutrons
*standard method of identifying isotopes is to write the mass number with a hyphen after the element name (eg: helium-3 or helium-4)
-All isotopes of an element have the same number of atomic number but not the same number of atomic mass because the number of neutrons of the atomic nucleus of each isotope varies
*Eg:
(extra but needed) Valence electrons
The number of of electrons in the outermost shell
