Ischemia

lack of oxygen to region of brain due to reduced blood flow
Necrosis
cell death as a result of lack of oxygen/lack of blood flow to region of brain
Infarct
area of dead cells/tissue breaks down and is absorbed leaving a cavity
Hematoma
a swelling or mass of blood caused by a break in a blood vessel
Hemorrhage
Actual bleeding/loss of blood from the circulatory system
Stenosis
narrowing
Edema
body tissues contain an excessive amount of tissue fluid
lesion
An umbrella term for an abnormal change in the structure of an organ or part due to injury or disease
Atrophy
wasting away/shrinking in size
Arteriosclerosis
thickening, hardening and loss of elasticity of the walls of the arteries
Atherosclerosis
A type of arteriosclerosis in which there is a focal accumulation of lipids, complex carbohydrates, blood and blood products, fibrous tissue and calcium deposits along the walls of the arteries
Ischemic stroke
Sudden loss of cerebral blood flow with interruption to the blood supply of the brain due to thrombus or embolus
Hemorrhagic stroke
Loss of cerebral blood flow caused by bleeding from an artery within the intracranial space
Thrombus/Thrombosis
A blood clot resulting in stenosis and eventually occulsion of artery (this stenosis and eventual occlusion is called thrombosis)
Embolus/Embolism
A thrombus/part of a thrombus that breaks away from the arterial wall and travels up the artery and lodges in a more distal artery or vessel. (Embolism is the term used for when the embolus lodges and reduces/stops blood flow)
TIA
Transient Ischemic Attack or brief, focal cerebral event
PPA
Primary Progressive Aphasia- aphasia characterized by deteriorating performance in language abilities, gradual onset, and lack of acute neurological injury
Paralysis
Loss of voluntary movement/gross limitation in movement
Paresis
Incomplete paralysis/weakness
Hemiplegia
Paralysis of one side of body
Hemiparesis
Weakness of one side of the body
Anesthesia
Partial or complete loss of sensation
Dysesthesia
Sensation as in "pins and needles"/ impairment of sensitivity to touch such that it is painful even when it should not be
Aphasia
A language impairment resulting from a stroke. It is characterized by impairment in all language modalities including: speaking, reading, writing and listening although not necessarily to the same extent in each. Aphasia may be accompanied by impairments in memory, and higher cortical functioning.
agnosia
Impairment in interpreting sensory information in a specific modality (e.g. tactile, auditory, visual)
