What is secondary storage and why do we need it? |
Secondry storage is the devices used to store programs, docs and files. These are non-volatile so files can be stored without power being supplied. |
What is magnetic storage? |
Magnwtic storage such as hard drives contain spinning magnetic discs, accessed by an arm that read/writes data. |
Advantages of mag storage... |
-High capacity at low cost -fast data access |
Disadvantages of mag storage... |
-the disk will fail over time -easily damaged (corruption of data) -large physical size -complex moving parts |
Common uses of mag storage... |
-desktop PCs -network storage -system backups -large document files |
Optical storage |
A track of pits goes from the centre to the edge of the disc. This is read by a laser into binary that contains the data stored. |
Advantages of optical storage... |
-cheap to produce -very portable -widely available |
Disadvantages to optical storage... |
-Discs can be damaged easily and degrade over time -limited capacity -compatability issues between players. |
Common uses of optical storage... |
-storing music, videos and games -CD -DVD -Blu-ray |
SSD storage |
A grid of electrical cells divided into sections (called pages) and then into blocks are used to send and recieve data. |
Advantages of ssd... |
-faster read/write than mag storage -small physical size -no moving parts -ideal for USB and other portable devices |
Disadvantages of ssd... |
-more expensive per Gb than mag or optiacl storage -can wear down over time |
Common uses of ssd... |
-USB portable drives -smartphone amd digital camera memory -laptop hard drives |
What characteristics can be used to compare secondary storage |
Capacity, speed, portability, durability, reliability and cost. |
