Raw materials of iron |
Iron ore F e2O3. Coke, c. Calcium carbonate . C burns to carbon dioxide . Co2 is reduced to C O C O reduces the Iron oxide to liquid iron. Calcium carbonate thermally decomposes to CaO under hear to react with SiO2 impurities in the ore to form slag which can be skimmed off. |
|
Basic oxygen steelmaking process (BOS process) |
Iron ore is put in a bucket. Magnesium powder is injected, this removed sulphur and floats as slag which can be skimmed off. This is emptied into a 'converter' that contain scrap steel. Oxygen blow -- this reacts with serveral undesirable elements (manganese , phosphorus etc.). The toxic CO is removed as a gas. this can be burned to release energy in other parts of the plant. Calcium and magenesium oxides are added to react with non metal oxides e.g. Si and P oxides. Aluminium reacts with any remaining oxygen which floats to the surfance and can be skimmed off. Desired elements can now be added. |
|
Colorimetry measures |
The amount of light of a particular frequency is absorbed by a substance . |
|
Rust is a reaction with |
Iron, O2 and H2O in the atmosphere to form hydrated iron 3 oxide. Fe(OH)3.xH2O |
|
Half cells are used to study |
Half reactions. Half cells can be joined together to form an electrochemical cell. |
