First stage of labor (Latent)
Mild contractions, talkative and eager, beg. cervical dilation and effacement, primi=8-20 hrs, multi=5-14
First stage of labor (Active)
cervical dilation from 4 to 7 cm. Progressive fetal descent-more pain, contractions more frequent/intense. Primi=1.2cm/hr, multi=1.5cm/hr
First stage of labor (transition)
a lot of pain, cervical dilation 8-10cm, progressive fetal descent, restless, crying, changing positions. primi= 1 cm/hr, multi=2cm/hr
Second stage of labor (very exhausting)
begins with complete dilation (10cm), ends w/ birth of baby, can last up to 2 hrs, longer w. an epidural (maybe 3 hrs), encourage mother to push through pain and burning.
Third stage of labor (from birth of infant to delivery of placenta)
uterus contracts firmly, (lasts 5-30 minutes), placenta begins to separate, sudden gush or trickle of bleeding, rise of fundus in the abdomen.
