1. In order to express a condition: what would you do with a hundred dollars?
Qué harías con 1000 dólares
I would travel to the Carribean
Yo viajaría por el Caribe.
2.Used as courtesy: could you help me?
Podríamos ayudarme, por favor
Could you answer the telephone, please
Podríamos contestar el teléfono, por favor?
3.To express present probability or doubt about an action occuring in the past: Who could/would have taken my books?
Quien tomaría mis libros?
What time would it have been when you arrived?
Qué hora sería cuando llegaste a casa?
Where could they have gone yesterday?
A dónde irían ellos yesterday?
4.To express advice, a suggestion or opinion
Structure: Impersonal expression + infinitive.
It would be good to work in Europe.
Sería bueno trabajar en Europa.
It would be better to help the children.
Sería visitar a mis amigas en el extranjero.
5.To express an intention or desire that can never be realised because there is always an obstacle.
Structure: Conditional + pero + present or preterite.
I would help you but I don't have time.
Yo te auydaría pero no tengo tiempo ahora.
She would attend the party but they did not invite her.
Ella asistiría a la fiesta pero no le invitaron.
6.To express a wish, generally with the verbs: querer, gustar y desear: I would like to live in the city.
Me gustaría vivir en la ciudad.
I would wish to vist my friends abroad.
Desearía visitar a mis amigas en el extranjero.
I want to accompany you.
Quisiera poder acompañarte.
The verb querer when expressing a wish is not conjugated as a normal conditional but in the imperfect subjunctive.
Quisiera, quisieras, quisiera,quisiréamos,quisierais,quisieran
The verb querer is used to express a doubt about the past in the present: Why didn't she want to come last night?
Por qué no querría venir ella noche?
Why doesn't the boy want the milk?
Por qué no querría el niño la leche
7. To express an idea contrary to reality but expressing possibilities: Si tuviera la guitarra, te cantaría una canción.
The structure: si+imperfect subjunctive+conditional.
If I had a guitar, I would sing you a song.
Si tuviera la guitarra, te cantaría una canción.
If you came to my house, I would show you my collection.
Si vinieras a mi casa, te mostraría mi colleción.
8. To express the probability of a past action.
was/were probably
It was probably 5pm when he arrived home.
Serían las 5pm cuando llegué a casa.
The boy was probably ten when I knew him.
El niño tendría 10 años cuando le conoci.
In this case you can substitute the coditional for the verb deber in the preterite
probably,could have, must have
Why wasn't Vicky at the reunión.
Por qué no fue Vicky a la reunión.
I don't know, she was probably sick.
No se. Debió (de) estar enferma.
