DEWEY JR: Morning Momma, who were you talkin to? |
Your daddy. |
DEWEY JR: Did he talk back? |
Not yet. I'm gonna go get dressed, baby. Can you get yourself some breakfast. |
After leaving stage, door bell rings. |
(offstage) Dewdrop! Dewdrop, answer the door, Precious! |
HARLENE: I am asking myself that very same question right now. |
(entering) I am so sorry, Dewdrop just told me y'all was here. Hey Marthann. (hug Marthann) Ozella. |
MARTHANN: If there's anything I can do for you today you just let me know. |
Thank you, Marthann. |
OZELLA: I am also available to do anything, anything at all, that you need. |
It ain't a competition, Ozella. Sammy Jo, didn't you offer these fine folks coffee? |
SAMMY JO (asked about coffee): Well, Harlene--- |
Don't blame your sister. Harlene, go get dressed. |
HARLENE (told to go get dressed): Yes, ma'am! |
(while Harlene exits) Did we make all the necessary arrangments? |
MARTHANN: Are there any special arrangements Dewey made in his will? |
Attie Van Leer is coming over this morning to discuss that very thing. |
SAMMY JO (after back and forth about the other thing): Momma |
Yes, Sammy Jo, and the other thing. And as I don't want everyone to know my personal business, I'd ask you to keep quiet on the subject. |
OZELLA (about the other thing): If I can be of any help with this other thing, you know I'll-- |
Yes, I know exactly what you'll do. You got one of the biggest mouths this side of Memphis. |
OZELLA (after Memphis mouth line): Well, I never. |
Oh yes you have and I won't have you doing it to my family. (DEWEY JR enters) Dewdrop, will you show Ms Meeks out? |
DEWEY JR: I can't tell you, it's a secret. |
What's today's secret mission, sweetheart? |
DEWEY JR: I'm gonna win the lottery tonight. I gotta watch TV all day for the numbers. |
(Dewey Jr exits) Well, Sammy Jo, there you go. |
SAMMY JO: Momma, that boy is one egg shy of a dozen. |
Don't you dare talk about your baby brother that way. Would you please make the coffee? Ozella, you were leaving were'nt you? |
OZELLA: If there's anything weighing on your soul about Brother Dewey's passing, I'd be glad as chairwoman of the SonShine committee to talk to you about it. |
Lord, everyone wants me to talk about it. Time was when a widow could just grieve without having to talk about every little feeling she had. I'm more inclined to follow that example. But, if I change my mind I'll be sure and let you know. (shows Ozella out the door... car honk) What now? |
MARTHANN: That'll be Benny Charles with the food from the Rotarians. |
I don't think we can fit any more food in the fridge Marthann |
SAMMY JO: Oh good, Benedict Arnold has arrived. Coffee? |
Sammy Jo, I will ask you to keep a civil tongue in your head. |
ATTIE: No Sammy Jo, I'm afraid I can't. |
Okay, Attie. Let's go in the sitting room. Sammy Jo, we'll be back in a minute. Make yourself useful and clean up all these Natural Light cans. What Ozella must have thought. |
(Dorothy enters) ATTIE: Well. I'll just be going. Ms Dorothy, I-- Well, I'll just be going. (ATTIE EXITS) SAMMY JO: Well, Momma, what's the deal? |
She tell you? |
MARTHANN: Lord yes, she told us. We're family, ain't we? What's going on? SAMMY JO: Are they gonna try to take your house? |
No, they're not gonna try to take my house. |
SAMMY JO (after taking the house line): Oh, thank goodness. |
They're gonna take the land it sits on. I'm more than welcome to move the house anywhere I like. HARLENE: Is that coffee ready yet? 2 BEATS, look at Harlene |
