Poverty in India
India is a developing country with a low per capita GDP, despite the fact that it has the 3rd largest GDP in the world.
-Tens of millions live in abject poverty.
Dravidians
Ancient group of people who started the Indian civilization on the Indus River (Now in Pakistan).
-They eventually migrated south down to the Deccan Plateau in Southern India.
Aryans
Ancient group of people from Europe who entered the subcontinent after the Dravidians.
The Aryans settled in Northern India while the original settlers (Dravidians) migrated to the south.
Sanskrit
Ancient language of the Aryans that is similar to Greek and Latin.
Hindi (modern day Sanskrit) is part of the Indo-European family of language.
Hinduism
Polytheistic religion started by the Aryans in India.
Brahma
The creator God in Hinduism.
(There is a breed of cow called Brahma.)
The cow is a sacred animal in Hinduism.
Caste system in India
Social class hierarchy established by the Aryans in India.
People are born into social classes.
-The top would be the Brahmans who were originally the priests, teachers, and judges.
-The lowest would be the Untouchables or Outcasts.
Buddhism
Established by an Indian Hindu (~500 BC) from the Brahman caste,
His name was Siddhartha Guatama (a noblemen or prince)
He had a problem with the caste system and turned his back on wealth and prestige.
He became known as Buddha or "The Great Enlightened One"
Reincarnation
Belief in Hinduism and Buddhism that souls come back and live again in another body until it becomes pure enough to break out of reincarnation.
Karma
Belief in Hinduism and Buddhism that if one has fulfilled their dharma, they will be promoted to a higher form of life in their next life or, if not they will be punished or demoted to a lower form of life in their next life.
Nirvana
Hindu and Buddhist heaven.
-To break out of the cycles of the reincarnation after the soul id pure enough (That is why they meditate so much.)
Pagoda
Multi-tiered Buddhist towers usually containing bells.
Zen Buddhism
Japanese version of Buddhism famous for its meditation techniques.
Many Japanese practice Buddhism and Shinto, their native religion of nature worship (Animism).
Sikhism
Indian religion with the elements of:
-Islam (Monotheistic & wear turbans)
-Hinduism (Reincarnation & meditation)
-Buddhism (Against the caste system)
Mohandas (Mahatma Gandi)
Led Indians in their independence movement from the British colonial rule by using non-violent resistance techniques such as boycotts.
His nickname is Mahatma (The Great Soul).
Himalayas
Originally a Sanskrit word for "Land of Snow." It's the world's highest mountain range which includes Mount Everest (29, 035 ft.) and K2 (28, 250 ft.).
It continues to grow higher due to converging plates.
Bangladesh
One of the two areas (along with Pakistan) that was designated for Muslims when the British partitioned and left their lands in India.
-It has the eighth largest population density in the world, (1,142 people per sq. km) excluding microstates.
Sri Lanka
Former British colony called Ceylon. It is famous for it's tea.

Voluntary associations of 54 former British colonies from the former British empire.
Angkor wat
Largest religious monuent in the world. (approx. one sq. mile.)
-Built in the 1100s.
-Originally Hindu, but now a wat (Buddhist temple)
-In Cambodia.
Saigon
Used to be the capital of South Vietnam.
When North Vietnam won the war in 1975, the city was renamed Ho Chi Minh City after their leader.

-The first two are in the top 10 population.

Small bands of fighters doing sneak attacks.
-Used by the Vietcong against the US army.

Vietnamese refugees wo fled Vietnam by boat when Ho Chi Minh won the war in 1975.
