marx viewed religion as the opiate of the masses that ensured the bourgouisie were able to stay in power over the proletariat. he believed that religion was harmful to the individual in society.

durkheim view of religion in society compared to marx and weber.

religion binds people together in a community and religion reflects the views of that society. he believed that society was fortified by religion. he talked about the sacred and the profane in religion. society uses totems to bind itself to the supernatural. these can be items or symbols that bring society closer to the supernatural. the profane is anything that isnt sacred and can detract or distract from the sacred.

capitalism stems from puritanism. they would work hard to gain wealth, but not for the sake of just having wealth. they claimed that traditional authority aften stems from religion, so he and durkheim would agree that religion is beneficial to modern society.
