Thor Heyerdahl (Norwegian) theorizes that Maori came from the east coast of South America to Polynesia on a Balsa raft.

Heyerdahl theory was based on the wind and currents and Kumera originally from South America found on the Polynesian Islands (he bases is on the name rather than the veg). Heyerdahl also found the Polynesians similar in statue to the South Americans.

New Zealander, Jim Siers, sailed from Gilbert Island in 1976 to Fiji to prove you could get from Asia to Polynesia AGAINST the winds and currents. The voyage was done in a traditional 24m canoe. Jim sailed over 2400km within a year.
