How was life for the Israelites in Egypt?

Not good, the Egyptian Pharoah enslaved them. He ordered all Israelite baby boys to be thrown in the Nile river to prevent rebellion.

Moses

An Israelite child saved by a Pharoah's daughter. Saw a burning Bush and heard gods voice, telling him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt to freedom

Exodus

The israelite escape from Egypt. Known today as passover.

The 10 Commandments

Laws Moses received from God on mount Sinai

Torah

Laws from God, which later became first part of the Hebrew bible. Includes the 10 Commandments.

How long did it take the Israelites to arrive to Canaan? What happened to Moses? What did they find there? What did they do?

40 years. Moses did not survive and another leader named Joshua took over. They found other people living there, mostly Canaanites. Believing it was gods will to conquer them, Joshua led them into battle.

The judges

After Joshua died, the Israelites looked to judges for leadership. Usually a military leader, commanding one or two tribes.

Deborah

Ordered an attack on Canaanite king Jabin. Barack and 10000 Israelites destroyed their army. They won control of the hilly region in central Canaan.

Who were the Phoenicians?

A group of Canaanites, who created the alphabet. Made writing simpler and helped them keep records. Passed to the Greeks and Roman's.

Philistines

The strongest people living in Canaan around 1000 BC.

Prophet

A person who the ancient Israelites thought was instructed by God.

Who was Saul? Who was David and what did he do?

Anointed by Samuel to be King of the Israelites. According to the bible, he disobeyed God and this caused God to choose another king, David, and was anointed by samuel in secret. When david became king, he conquered the Philistines. He drove them from the area and made an empire.

Jerusalem

Taxing the Israelite people (tributes)

Who was Solomon?

Son of David, created proverbs, but disliked by the Israelites because of his taxes.

Samaria, in the north, the larger kingdom

Jerusalem. The kingdom was in the south, and was the smaller of the two

Emphasized religious ideals of leading a moral life.

What caused the fall of Israel?

The Assyrians, whom conquered Israel and scattered the 10 tribes in the empire.

Why did Judah fall?

Egyptians conquered it. The Jews were able to keep their king, but had to pay tribute to Egypt. Then the chaldeans conquered Egypt, who became the new rulers of Judah.
