A category of people who have been singled out, by others or themselves, as inferior or superior, on the basis of subjectivity selected physical charecteristics such as skin, hair, and eye shape
Racial Group
A category of people who are distinguished, by others of themselves, as inferior or superiior primarily on the basis of cultural or nationality characteristics
Ethnic Group
Group that is advanced and has superior resources and rights in a society
Dominant Group
Group whose members, because of physical or cultural characteristics, are disadvantaged and subjected to unequal treatment by the majority group and regard themselves as objects of collective discrimination
Subordinate/minority Group
A set of attitudes, beliefs, and practices used to justify the superior treatment of one racial or ethnic group and hte inferior treatment of another
Racism
A negative attitude based on faulty generalizations about members of selected racial and ethnic groups
Prejudice
The assuption that one's own group and way of life are superior to all others
Ethnocentrism
Overgeneralizations abotu the appearance, behavior, or other characteristics of all members of a group
Stereotypes
Consists of one-on-one acts by members of the dominant group that harm members of the subordinate group or their property
Individual Discrimination
Consists of day-to-day practices of organizations and institutions taht have a harmful impact of members of a subordinate group
Institutional Discrimination
Prejudice and discriminatory behavior directed at Jews
Anti-Semitism
A person or group that is blamed for some problem causing frustration and is therefore subjected to hostility or aggression by others
Scape Goat
The process by which members of subordinate racial and ethnic groups become absorbed into the dominanat culture
Assimilation
A process in which the cultural attributes of the diverse recial-ethnic groups are blended together to forma new society incorporating the unique contributions of each group.
Amalgamation/Melting Pot Model
Refers to a pattern of assimilation whereby members of subordinate racial-ethnic groups are expected to conform to culture of the dominant Anglo-Saxon population
Anglo-conformity model
The coexistence of diverse racial-ethnic groups with seperate identities and cultures within a society
Ethnic Pluralism
The spatial and social seperation of categories of people by race/ethnicity, class, gender, religion, or other social characteristics
Segregation
The interactive effect of racism and sexism in exploiting women of color
Gendered Racism
A process that occurs when members of a racial-ethnic group are conquered or colonized and forcibly placed under the economic and political control of the dominant group
