Define role and role expectations

A role is the behaviour adopted by an individual orassigned to them that influences the way in whichthey function or act in different situations and lifein general.


Roleexpectations is knowing what is expected of them intheir various relationships with other group members.

Define obedience

Obedience is when we follow the commands of someone with authority or the rules or laws of our society.

Name three factors that affect obedience.

Social proximity, legitimacy of the authority figure, and group pressure.

Define social proximity.

- refers to the closeness between two or more people


- includes both physical distance and closeness of their relationship


Eg. dropping a bomb and to kill thousands from a distance, or than to shoot and kill someone in front of you.

Define legitimacy of an authority figure.

- a person is more likely to be obedient if the authority figure is perceived to be legitimate and having power.


Eg. We are more likely to obey a police officer wearing their uniform than a person in casual clothing saying they are a police officer.

Define group pressure.

- a person is more likely to be obedient where there is little or no group support or resisting the authority figure.


Eg. Milgram's study showed that if a participant was exposed to the actions of people disobeying the authority figure's commands, full obedience decreased.

Define conformity

Conformity is the tendency toadjust one’s thoughts, feelings or behaviour in ways thatare in agreement with those of a particular individual orgroup, or with accepted standards about how a personshould behave in certain situations (social norms).

What are the seven factors that affect conformity?

Group size, unanimity, informational influence, normative influence, culture, social loafing an deindividuation.
