Group size
Minimum three members maximum of 15 members with the ideal small group consisting of five to seven members.
Interdependence
The effects that you and your group members have on each other. The concept of interdependence is most closely associated with systems theory which states that all parts of a system work together to adapt to its environment.
Task
Defined as an activity in which decision or solution cannot be made without the input of all your group members and often defined by an external audience who also may evaluate weather to the task was completed effectively.
Task characteristics
1 - determine whether the task is easy to accomplish
2 - identify the number of alternatives that exist for accomplishing the task
3- establish what is important appealing interesting or fascinating about the task.
4 - recognize the degree of familiarity group members have with the task.
5 - pinpoint the degree to which the outcome of the task is down to be acceptable.
6 - verify the amount of authority the group has for executing the task.
7 - consider the degree of ego involvement invested in the task.
Norms
Guidelines or rules your group implements about not only how members should behave but also how your group should approach its tasks.
Identity
The psychological and or physical boundaries that distinguish a group member from a non group member.
Group talk
The specific types of communication in which you and your group members engage.
Types of group talk

Problem solving talk
Defines and analyzes the problem identify several solutions and chooses one solution
Decision-making talk
Select an option from a set of already selected options in which no externally correct option exists.
Functional perspective of small group communication
States that a group's performance is directly related to how well members engage in each of the five communicative functions necessary to make an informed choice
5 communicative functions
1 - developing a correct understanding of the issue
2- determining the minimal characteristics required of the alternatives needed to resolve the issue
3- requires group members to identify an appropriate adequate and unambiguous set of alternatives.
4- involves examining the alternatives identified in the third step in relation to the minimal characteristics established in the second step.
5 - to select the best alternative in light of the previous four functions.

Refers to the communicative behaviour any group member can enact to demonstrate leadership. Shared leadership emerges from any group member who possesses competence talent or interest in the task or relation area under consideration by the group.
Emergent leader approach to leadership
Emerges through the communication that occurs among group members by choosing to eliminate those individuals who do not demonstrate leadership behaviors
Counter active influence approach to leadership
The notion that when the group encounters an obstacle course one member needs to draw upon a repertoire of communicative skills that 1 counters what other group members have said or done and 2 influence its members to resolve or remove whatever caused the obstacle

The process that occurs when group members engage in an expressed struggle that impedes task accomplishment and usually arises due to the real and perceived differences that exist among group members

You are more interested in satisfying your own needs and satisfying the needs of your group members

You are highly concerned with meeting the needs of your group members ignoring your own needs
