Basic sleep cycle

Progression through sleep cycles. Normally, from wakefulness to NE sleep followed by REM sleep. These periods alternate throughout the night approx. 4-6 times.

Biological Clock

Term for the brain causing us to have 24 hour fluctuations in body temperature, hormone secretion, and sleep and wakefulness. Found in the suprachiasmatic nuclei.

Brain Waves

The brain's electrical activity as measured by an EEG.

Circadian Rhythms

24 hour cycle of fluctuation in physiological and behavioral functions. The suprachiasmatic nucleus is the pacemaker to this as it is affected by light.

Delta Sleep

NREM sleep characterized by the predominance of delta waves. Sleep stage NY is delta sleep.

Diagnostic sleep study

Baseline study; sleep study with the goal to diagnose a sleep disorder

Drowsiness

Subtle state of wakefulness prior to sleep onset
