a German who helped train the continental army; he had served in the Prussian Army which was considered to be the best in Europe. He taught the soldiers how to march, how to improve their aim and how to attack with bayonets. Because of the good training he gave the American troops, the troops became much more effective [they became much better soldiers]. |

John Paul Jones

commanded the naval ship Bonhomme Richard. He fought the British warship Serapis. During the battle many British and American soldiers died. This battle destroyed both ships. He would not give up and his famous quote is ‘I have not yet begun to fight.’ Finally, the British warship Serapis eventually surrendered. |

Francis Marion

He was a leader of a guerrilla tactics team. He led his men silently through swamps in South Carolina to attack the British. Using Guerrilla tactics allowed his team to attack without warning and then escape. His nickname was SWAMP FOX. |
