Topic Sentence
I believe that the Etu ritual plays a significant role in the Sistren Theatre Collective's play, QPH.
What is the Etu ritual?
The Etu ritual is and African ritual that is practiced in Jamaica and resurrects the dead.
How is it used in the play?
The Etu ritual uses shawling dipping, and earth bound movements to ressurrect the dead and this is seen in QPH when Queenie,
"shawls Hopie and Pearlie" to the beat of the Etu drums (Sistren 158).
Commentary
Within the play it used to celebrate the lives of Pearlie and Hopie and dramatise their unacknowledged contributions to the society.
Significance
The uninterrupted Etu ritual functions as a mnemonic device that shows evidence of a cultural history and lets the audience understand the lives of those who died in the Kinsgston Almshouse.
