Resolution

-complete rstoration of normal structure and function of tissue

- mild injury with minimal tissue damage will

resolve eg. mild thermal burn

Abscess formation

- a pus filled cavity is an abscess - pimple

-suppurative exudate or pus = necrotic tissue neutrophils and pyogenic bacteria

-eg. acute lung abscesses due to staphylococcal infection

Repair ( healing)

-necrotic tissue is removed and replaced by :

regeneration = division of surviving

parenchymal cells eg. liver, bone, kidney may regenerate but not brain (organ doesn't

regeneration)

organizaton = fibroblasts recruit to necrotic, deposits collagen

-usual outcome, rapid replacement of

specialized cells by a collagen scar

Granulation tissue

-forms the scar and consists of fibroblasts producing collagen, new capillaries providing nutrients, and macrophages

-mature scar = collagen tissue

-healing is an energy dependent process (ATP) = need good oxygen supply

Chronic inflammation

-inflammation becomes long-standing

-injury persists leading to constant inflammation as well as constant attempts at healing

-immune system cells are recruited

-lymphocytes found in tissue and usually much scar eg. chronic peptic ulcer
