What are the three arms of government?

The legislature, the executive, and the judiciary.

Who is the legislature and what is their role?

The legislature is parliament.


They make laws.

Who is the Executive and what is their role?

The executive are Ministers and government departments.


They administer and enforce the laws made by parliament.

Who are the judiciary?

The judiciary are the courts.


They apply and interpret the law made he parliament.


They interpret the Constitution and ensures no one oversteps.

Why are the three arms independent?

To act as a check on each other and ensure no branch abuses it's powers so that civil liberties are protected.

Why is there not a complete and pure separation of powers?

Some ministers and the prime minister are members of both the legislature and the executive. Furthermore, the prime minister appoints the justices for the courts, and thus also having a role in the judicature.
