200 species live in freshwater environments while the vast majority are sessile marine organisms.

How does excretion and respiration occur in sponges?

Through diffusion. Water enters there sponges via tiny ostia in the dermes and makes its way to a large cavity called a spongocoel lined with choanocytes.
