What is folliculitis and what causes it?
Itching and burning in hairy areas, pustules in the hair follicles.
Caused by: Staph infection (esp in diabetics) Klebsiella, Enterobacter, E. coli, Proteus (may develop during antibiotic treatments for acne) Pseudomonas aeruginosa - "hot tub folliculitis" |
What is the largest organ of the body?
Integument - composed of skin, hair and nails
What embryonic layers became the epidermis and dermis?
Epidermis: ectoderm
Dermis: mesoderm |
Describe the 4 populations of cells that make up the stratified squamous keratinized epithelium of skin?
1) Keratinocytes - largest population of the 4; make up all 5 layers
2) Langerhans cells - the dendridic (APC) cells of the skin; located in stratum spinosum 3) Melanocytes - derived from neural crest cells; located mosty in stratum basale 4) Merkel cells - derived from neural crest cells; mechanoreceptors; located mostly in stratum basale |
What are the 5 layers of epidermis from most internal to most external? Which ones are only present in thick skin?
Stratum basale - supported by a basement membrane and consisting of a single layer of cuboidal to low columnar cells
Stratum spinosum Stratum granulosum* Stratum lucidum* Stratum corneum * These are only present in thick skin "she sits in her Basement Spinning Grand, Lucid, but Corny tales" |
What type of collagen makes up most of the dermis?
Type III and VII in the papillary layer (most superficial layer that is loosely woven)
Type I in reticular layer |
Describe the 3 major types of skin cancer.
Basal cell carcinoma: Most common; originates in stratum basale cells; caused by UV; rarely metastasize
Squamous cell carcinoma: begins in keratinocytes; locally invasive and may metastasize; can begin with keratosis; caused by UV Melanoma: melanocytes become malignant, invade dermis and enter lymphatic and blood vessels. Most deadly. |
What is located in the dermis, but was derived from the epidermis?
Sweat glands
Sebaceous glands Hair follicles |
Name 3 mechanoreceptors that are in the dermis and what they do.
Meissner corpuscles: light touch
Pacinian corpuscles: Pressure Ruffini corpuscles: tensile forces ("When you get RUFF, I get TENSe") |
What's the difference between eccrine sweat glands and apocrine sweat glands?
Eccrine: all over the body; they are under direct sympathetic control and are unique in the sympathetic system since they have cholinergic receptors (so ACh is the neurotransmitter instead of the usual norepi)
ApocrinE: in Axilla, Aerola of the nipple, Anal region, as well as External genitalia, Ear canal and Eyelid (3 A's, 3 E's) |
What is the main protein found in hair and nails?
keratin
