What are cells ?

Cells are the basic units of all living things including animals, plants, and humans.
What do animal cells and plant cells have in common?
Both cells have cell membranes, protoplasm (nucleus, and cytoplasm), and vacuoles.

(Animal cell) Cell membrane

- A thin layer around the cell

- Partially permeable-allowing some substances to pass through, but not others.

- The shape of the cell can change

(Animal cell) Cytoplasm

- A jelly-like substance that fills the cell

- Contains (water) and (other substances)

- Chemical reactions take place within it

(Animal cell) Vacuoles

- Tiny spaces containing (air, solution or food particles)

- Animals cells have many small vacuoles

(Animal cell) Nucleus

- Controls cell activities

- Contains (chromosomes) which carry (genetic information)

(Animal cell) Food storage

- Store food in the form of (glycogen granules)

(Animal cell) Cell arrangement
- Not arranged in a fixed pattern

(Plant cell) Cell wall

- A thick permeable layer surrounding the cell

- Made up of (cellulose)

- Supports the cell and gives it a regular shape

(Plant cell) Chloroplasts
- (Small disc-like structures) found in the cells of green plants

- Contain a green substance called (chlorophyll) which absorbs energy from the sun and uses it to make food

(Plant cell) Vacuole

- A single large space containing (cell sap) which (consists of water and dissolved substances) such as (sugar and mineral salts)

- The cell sap keeps the cell turgid or firm by taking in water

(Plant cell) Cell membrane

- A thin partially permeable layer surrounding the cell

(Plant cell) Cytoplasm

- A jelly-like substance that fills the cell

(Plant cell) Nucleus

- Controls the activity of the cell

(Plant cell) Cell arrangement

- Normally arranged in a regular pattern

(Plant cell) Food storage
- Store food in the form of starch grains
