Investigation |
An investigation is a series of one or moreexperiments that helps us answer a question. |
Experiment |
Experiment is different from an investigation because it gives us clues! |
Scientific Method |
Process used to figure out a problem or to answer a questionAlways starts with a QUESTION!Six steps… Queen- Question Henrietta- Hypothesis Eats- Experiment Dark- Data Chocolate- Conclusion To Relax- Test and Refine |
Observation |
Science is a search for knowledge based on observation & experimentation.Observations made directly with human senses (see, touch, hear, smell, taste)Sometimes devices such as microscopes are used to help.Must be accurate (carefully made and correctly recorded)Must also be objective (avoids bias, or a certain point of view)Example: It is raining. (Accurate & Objective)It rains all of the time! (not accurate)The weather is awful! (not objective) |
Two Types of Observations |
Qualitative – describes an object or eventQuantitative – Measures or quantifies an object or event (includes specific #s)Examples:Qualitative – Jackie is wearing a bright red shirt today.Quantitative – Jackie is 5 feet 3 inches tall. |
Inference |
Based on observationsPossible (not final) explanations of our observationsMust be logicalSometimes several inferences for an observationMay be changed when new observations are made.Inferences attempt to explain what was observed or is being observed presently. |
Prediction |
Forecast future events.Based on past observations or available data.Amount of data & accuracy of data have an effect on the accuracy of the prediction.Predictions use past observations toforecast what will or could happen in the future. |
