Volt

The unit of pressure or force that causes

electrons to move.

Amp

A measurement that shows the flow of

electrons.

Circuit

The path in which electrons move.

Current

A stream of moving electrons.

Direct Current [DC]

When electrons move in only one direction.

Alternating Current [AC]

When electrons move rapidly back and forth in a circuit. Alternating the flow of electrons.

Conductor

Something that permits an easy flow of

electrons. (ex: Metal)

Insulator

Something that allows little or no flow of

electrons. (ex: Rubber)

Resistance

A substance that limits the amount of current that can run through it. (It usually depends on the thickness, composition, length, and temperature of the substance.)

Ohm

This is the unit of measurement for resistance.

Rheostat

A device that controls the amount of resistance in an electrical circuit.

Series Circuit

When the same current passes through all

devises because there is only one path.

Parallel Circuit

When the current divides and forms paths that branch out.

Fuse

A devise that provides protection from current overload in a circuit.

Breaker

A electromagnetic switch that opens when the circuit overloads, breaking the flow of the

current.

Transformer

This is a devise that changes the voltage of power lines so the current is safe for houses.

Watt

This is the unit of measure for electrical power.

Short Circuit

A sudden or large drop in resistance in the

circuit that can lead to shocks, or even electrical fires.

Complex Circuit

A circuit that does not contain components of either parallel or series circuits.

Kilowatt-Hour

The measurement for the electric energy in the home.

Open Circuit

When a switch is turned off interrupting the flow of the electrical current. This stops the flow of the current moving though a circuit.

Closed Circuit

When a switch is turned on so that a current can flow through a devise without interruption.
