Act 1 scene 1

"Well armed"

"The siege"

"Cupids arrow"

Lovesick/depressed person

Act 1 scene 1

"Out of her favour"

"Fair"

"A mistress passing fair"

"O brawling love,o loving hate"

The word "brawl" means to fight or to have a quarrel and so Shakespeare is foreshadowing the fact that love and conflict are intertwined, that the lovers are going to be embroidered in a conflict that will ruin their relationship.and this reminds us of the prologue when we are told that they are are "death marked"

Contradictions

"Serious vanity"

Romeo doesn't mention rosalines name he describes her appearance rather than her, his speech about rosaline is almost like an objectification of a woman's appearance. He uses the the noun "vanity"and this shows the lack of value towards rosaline and he even admits that fact that what he feels for rolsaine doesn't have that notion of true love. So Shakespeare's use of rosalines part in the play could be to highlight romeos tragic flaw, he loves to quickly and his love for her is a desire and infatuation rather than something that involves affection. This links to the Friars words when he say that "young mens love lies in their eyes" again remaining us of romeos tragic flaw

Act 1 scene 1

"Love is smoke with fumes of sighs"

Juliet says:"you kiss by the book"

Young confused Petrarchan lover

Act 1 scene 1

"Feather of lead,bright smoke,cold fire,sick health"

These oxymorons set up an artificial romance.

The fact that he is infatuated with rosaline and it not being a deep love, as he uses his eyesight to love a woman rather looking at their personality.whereas his language then contrasts when he meets Juliet his language is heightened and is religious and is scared.

Act 1 scene 3

"Compare her face with some others"

"Religion"

"Snowy dove"

In paganism a "dove" it actually symbolises the goddess of love, sexuality and war.these are 3 prominent themes and so Shakespeare intertwined them all in one symbol of a dove

"Crows"

Act 1 scene 5

"Like a rich jewel in an Ethiopias ear"

"Did my heart love till now?for I never saw true beauty till this night"

Tragic flaw( loving too quickly )/ metaphor

Act 1 scene 5

"This holy shrine"

The adjective "holy" means something that is sacred and and Devine and so when he compares Juliet to a "shrine" it shows how he is devoted to her and worships her.however this is blasphemes, to compare Juliet to something that should be worshiped like god is seen as blasphemes.By defying god the lovers are going to be punished.the comparison borders on orthodox.their relationship faces not only conflict from the family feud but also a conflict with religion.

"Sin" contrasts with "holy shrine"

"Two blushing pilgrims"
